There’s a lot to appreciate when it comes to coffee and tea. What part of the world it originated from, what it took to procure and the culture that surrounds it are just some of the things to appreciate about it. Whether you’re a coffee or tea drinker, metro Detroit has no shortage of great places to pull up a chair, sip on something delicious and just relax.
A couple of years ago The Bottom Line, a coffee shop and space for people to to enjoy the community they are part of, reopened under new management: Noura Balout. Since then, The Bottom Line has continued to be a safe place where friends and communities can gather to drink coffee, share stories and make art. Unfortunately, The Bottom Line is facing permanent closure due to a debt accrued by a previous management team. Right now, the modest coffee shop is seeking donations via gofundme.com. Their goal is to raise $8,000 by January 31, 2017. As of this writing, they are more than halfway there.
Located in Rosedale on Grand River, Always Brewing Detroit has a fresh lineup of coffee from Michigan-based roasters, as well as tea selections from ELI Tea. What’s different about Always Brewing Detroit is that every Wednesday morning, you can partake in a morning yoga session in the coffee shop before it opens for the day. So, if you find yourself in the neighborhood on a Wednesday morning, drop in for a quick yoga sesh, followed by freshly brewed coffee or tea. Talk about jump starting your day!
SocraTea has some pretty high standards when it comes to tea. With a name like SocraTea, it’s really not that surprising that all of its tea meets or surpasses USDA organic standards and is tested in Germany, a country with stricter regulations on tea safety than the U.S. Needless to say, SocraTea takes tea seriously. With more than 60 black, oolong, green, white, rooibos and herbal teas, you might just be returning to SocraTea a lot more than you expected.

Located in Royal Oak, Bean & Leaf Cafe offers organic coffee and more than 30 loose leaf teas to choose from. It is independently owned and, in addition to their coffee and tea selections, there are some more adventurous options like the Nitro Brew Float — an infusion of root beer, ice cream and nitrous oxide for an extra fizzy kick to a deliciously sweet beverage.
The last spot on this list isn’t actually a coffee or tea shop at all, but we’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the International Coffee & Tea Festival happening at the Detroit Institute of Arts on Saturday & Sunday, January 21-22. The event is a celebration of coffee & tea traditions from Arabic, Japanese, Indian and Chinese cultures. There will be tea demonstrations, tastings, dance and more. Visit dia.org for a full breakdown of the festivities.
